Professional Fighting
Boxing
Boxing is a martial art and a sport that involves fighting inside a squared ring. During a match, two athletes face each other, usually wearing gloves, hand wraps, and mouthpieces, and strike one another for a predetermined time.
While the West is often referred to as the birthplace of the sport known as ‘boxing,’ in which the only implements used are fists (hence the name), the sport of ‘boxing’ as it exists throughout the world exists as a continuum of combat sports that derive primarily from striking, and, in this era, is practiced by two athletes standing before each other in a fight, in which both or either use fists and, depending upon the rules, could use any combinations or sequences of kicks, elbow strikes, knee strikes, and headbutts, among other rules variations. These include bare-knuckle boxing, kickboxing (later names for forms of boxing were introduced, particularly in the West), Muay Thai, Lethwei, savate, Sanda, and others. An almost universal characteristic of combat sports and martial arts is the derivation of techniques from boxing forms.
Mixed martial arts (MMA)
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport based on striking, grappling, and ground fighting. MMA incorporates techniques from combat sports worldwide, such as kickboxing, catch wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and others. Currently, the most dominant set of rules worldwide is the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, which have been adopted by all state athletic commissions in the United States that regulate MMA competition and are used most notably in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The Unified Rules of MMA are the de facto rules in the United States for MMA competition and have been adopted by other promotions and jurisdictions worldwide. Others include Shooto’s ruleset, which was the first to require padded gloves, and Pride rules, after the PRIDE Fighting Championships, which UFC later adopted; and most recently, the Global MMA Ruleset, a synthesis of the best practices from Asian (PRIDE) and non-Asian (Unified) rules, used by ONE Championship.
Fighting Championships
What do fights like Sean O’Malley versus? They are all parts of a Fight Championship. So, what is a Fight Championship, what is a Fight, and what type of sports are we talking about? In short, Fight Championships are contests where competitors face off in combat sports such as boxing, mixed martial arts (MMA), wrestling, kickboxing, and similar disciplines. These contests can range from amateur to professional and may be organized locally, nationally, or internationally. Fight Championships aims to determine the best fighter in a given sports division through a tournament of contests or ‘bouts.’ Some of the best-known Fight Championships include the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Bellator MMA, ONE Championship, and the Professional Fighters League (PFL).
The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is an American mixed martial arts (MMA) organization that began in 2018. Fighters compete in a regular season, playoffs, and championship to crown an overall winner within each weight division. The league aims to provide a more structured and predictable route to title contention—specifically, world title contention—and is built upon regular competition and a clear title picture.
